WUP Semester – Visual Communication 24/25
The 1st semester, called the »WUP« (Warm-Up) Semester, is an interdisciplinary foundation course for design students. It consists of two teaching modules: Visual Communication and Product Design.
WUP - Visual Communication
Students completed the following exercises:
-
Design Classics
Objective: Introduction to vector graphics and digital drawing using Adobe Illustrator.
Exercise: Students digitally illustrated a famous »Design Classic« object, experimenting with different perspectives and techniques. -
Typeface Design Basics
Objective: Advanced digital drawing and typeface creation.
Exercise: Students designed editable OpenType (OTF) fonts using Adobe Illustrator and FontSelf. This exercise was developed in the context of the design research project “Graphic Design from the Alps”, led by Prof. Antonino Benincasa and Prof. Massimo Martignoni. The research, which explores historical and contemporary graphic design practices rooted in the Alpine region, served as the conceptual basis. Students reinterpreted incomplete alphabets inspired by historical Alpine typefaces from Trentino, South Tyrol and Tyrol, drawing influences from European design movements like Bauhaus, Rationalism, and Arts-and-Crafts. -
AlpiTypes Poster
Objective: Presentation and exploration of typographic possibilities.
Exercise: Students showcased their designed AlpiTypes fonts in a print booklet using Adobe InDesign. This task was also developed as part of the “Graphic Design from the Alps” research project. Students created experimental typographic posters to highlight the formal and aesthetic versatility of their AlpiTypes typefaces, reflecting the historical and contemporary design elements explored in the research. -
My Magazine My Voice
Objective: Fundamentals of editorial design and self-expression.
Exercise: Students developed personalized print publications, exploring layout grids, typography, and content creation. Each project was based on topics of personal interest, resulting in unique, self-published booklets.
