The Scythe: Can we modernize an ancient tool?

MESALÖNA – Adjustable and foldable scythe

Samuel Simoni

MOWING AND TRIMMING

Mowing grass is one of the most important and common maintaining techniques in  gardens. You have to do it at least once a month in order to keep your lawn nice and clean. Most people associate mowing to a motor powered machine, like a lawnmower or a stringmower for smaller spaces. Many of them don’t even consider hand-mowing techniques anymore. For this reason tools like the sickles or scythes have almost been forgotten.

Scythes still get used by farmers to mow there, where mowers can’t go. But due to its precise proportions, and the complicated mowing technique, the scythe is a hard – to use tool.

The scythe is just like a pair of trousers, you can’t use it, if it’s not your size.

Easily storable and highly adaptable – with MESALÖNA the hand-mowing technique was brought up to a new level. Without all the disadvantages of the traditional scythe.

ABOUT MESALÖNA

MESALÖNA is a reinterpretation of the traditional scythe. It shares some principal features like the traditionally shaped blade but completely overturns others, like the movement itself or the flexible shaft.

It consists of a traditionally hand – forged blade which is attached threw a screw onto the shaft. Two “L” arranged handles are fixed onto the shortened (100cm) stem, which is connected threw a rubber-band onto a completely adjustable, three point harness. The highly breathable, lightweight harness, allows the user to move the blade freely from left to right without having to support all its weight. The movement you have to perform in order to use MESALÖNA is not like the traditional scything movement where you pull and push the tool but more like a swinging movement. You swing the tool from left to right while keeping upright by holding it onto the handles. Unlike the stiff shaft of the traditional scythe, this one, due to its flexible component, permits you a slight regulation of the movement towards the lawn.

The simple and smart folding mechanism of blade and handlebar, allows the customer to carry and store it safely, while taking up less space than a normal scythe.

MESALÖNA is a professional hand-mowing tool which can be used in steep mountain – lawns as well as low home lawns. If sharpened correctly, it has no problems to cut every type of grass, without ruining the cutted material, which could eventually be feeded to animals. The durable, lightweight materials of this object, like carbonfiber and stainless steel, allow customers to easily carry it around. Its wooden grips provide a great natural hold and the polyester harness can be weared thanks to the rudimental buckle system.

Flexibility and adaptability make MESALÖNA a unique tool in its category, and in the whole world of lawn – mowing.

Tools for Gardeners The word culture is derived from early farming, from agriculture and horticulture. It is based on those prehistoric activities that humans had to carry out to survive and to make the Earth their property. Agriculture is still very much practised in the same spirit, but today it is rational, mechanised and automated by using the latest digital technology. The culture of gardening, on the other hand, is the result of a human passion to create spaces with plants that are both aesthetically real and illusionary.
