How does internal migration in Italy shape identity and belonging?

This project from my perspective started as an attempt to reconnect with my roots and to better understand this culture that during the course of my life I always lefted aside. However on a broader point of view, the main objective shifted toward an investigation of the relationship between migration and stereotypes. By listening several people’ experience of moving and integrating in a new city, my interest become to tell the story of a difficult social reality in the region of Calabria discussing topic as organized crime, public infrastracture, social degradation and State absence in contrast to people’ willingness of change and sense of community. Even if nowadays it can be said that negative prejudices are less common, migrants from the South  in the past decades often experienced forms of discrimiation in the North. For many however migrating was seen as the only possible solution to improve their condition. Today Calabria is between the italian regions with lowest growth rate. Through my photographic process I try to highlight the impact of a bad economy and  poor administration  on the territory  in communication with the voices of those who shared their stories during the interviews.The project aims to be a form of social critique, not so much to offer a solution, but to show those who believe in prejudices and stereotypes the social context lacking opportunities from which (internal) migrants come from and the struggles they face to upgrade their status.
