Can sound influence our taste perception? Can visual perception influence taste?

How sound and visual design shape taste

Franziska Elli Schoen

This project explores how our sense of taste can be influenced by what we hear and see. It examines whether sounds and visual impressions can change the way we experience flavor.

Studies show that sounds can affect how sweet, bitter, or intense something tastes. Shapes and other visual elements can also influence our expectations before tasting. The project highlights that taste is not only created by food itself, but also by the interaction of different senses.

Designing How Things Feel (Right) - Usability & Emotional Interaction in Physical Products

How do objects shape experiences? This course explores the relationship between function, emotion, and interaction in product design. Through the development of an emotion-driven swing and a series of “Tasting Tools” centered around bread, chocolate, and wine, students investigated how design influences perception, behavior, and experience. The resulting projects demonstrate that products are not only used—they are experienced.
