What would it be like to live in a world without windows?

Aussichtslos – Magazine

Sophie Feichter

Aussichtslos – a German word with a double meaning: hopeless and without a view. This is exactly where my magazine project begins. While we usually use windows to look outside, this project radically turns the perspective around and explores a world that is completely windowless.

The magazine is divided into three chapters, both visually and conceptually, exploring three central questions:

  • The view inside: What happens when we are trapped inside – without any view of the outdoors?
  • The view outside: What happens when you are outside, but there are no windows on the buildings,   leaving you exposed and defenseless without protection?
  • The big picture: In the end, does the absolute absence of windows actually mean a completely new form of freedom?

Visual Concept: To make the heavy, yet fascinating atmosphere of these worlds tangible, the magazine does not only use text. Each chapter uses a special layout and specific color psychology in the photography to emotionally convey the mood of each question.

The Window Is the Point

The course examines the "window" as a conceptual model of visual communication—as a metaphor, a device of perception, and a structural principle for layout, grids, typography, white space, and interactive elements. Students analyze historical and contemporary examples from art and design history to digital interfaces and use them as a basis for developing their own experimental design projects. The aim is to create projects that intentionally shape attention, visibility, and meaning in print and digital formats, staging them spatially.
