Research shows that we feel most content around the age of 20, then declines until rising again after age 50.
This creates a U-shaped curve, where people are generally more satisfied in youth, less so in middle age, and then more satisfied again in later years. However, this U-curve does not apply to all countries: Who is happiest or unhappiest varies from country to country.

What is really making us happy?

So, what can demographics and happiness research show us then? The answer is as simple as precious: Happiness depends less on age and more on the ability to navigate the challenges and joys of life. Prioritizing our wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around us can help us live happier, healthier lives. There are Five Ways to Wellbeing which are simple ways to improve the mental and social wellbeing. They include the five actions of connect, be active, take notice, keep learning, give. Incorporating the Five Ways into your daily routine is easy, free, and can be done anywhere.

Connect
… means to truly be with family, friends, or people in your community, which will give you a sense of belonging. You could go for a walk with a friend, meet new people at a community event or spend time at home with your family. Call or message someone you haven’t spoken to in a while to reconnect.

Be active
… means moving your body which will help you to keep fit and healthy, both mentally and physically. Find ways to be active like taking a walk, dancing, doing some yoga or playing a sport or game.

Take notice
… means slowing down which will help you to feel calm and relaxed. Learn to enjoy small moments. Take in the beauty of the world around you. Take a break and enjoy a few deep breaths.

Keep learning
… means experiencing new things and challenging your mind with new knowledge will give you a sense of achievement. Try something new regularly. Explore a new hobby that interests you.

Give
… means to give what you can. It can be as simple as helping a friend or opening a door for someone. You can also give on a bigger scale by volunteering your time to support an important cause. It will not only make them happy but make you feel good as well.

We invite people to reflect and participate by taking a short survey by scanning the QR code.

And you, what makes you happy?

A project made in the course

Information Design & Visual Storytelling

In a world heavily driven by the production and consumption of information, being able to read and represent it has become extremely critical and undeniably important. The Information Design and Visual Storytelling course aims to provide students with the theoretical background - and the opportunity to practice it - necessary to develop visualization projects in their entirety. The first part of the course will consist of lectures interspersed with small exercises to make students familiarize with the disciplines of information design and visual storytelling. We will work together to understand the basic principles of the discipline and how to apply them in real projects.
