Is there equality in the labour market between men and women?

Thermometer of injustice

Our project explores the position of women in the labor market, a subject that deeply resonates with us. Is there pay equality between men and women across Europe? Are women actively participating in the workforce, or does the outdated belief that a woman's place is at home still persist? And what about the situation in Italy? The gender gap in the labor market goes beyond statistics, reflecting deeper systemic inequalities in access to opportunities, wages, and career advancement. Despite progress, women still earn less than men on average, face greater obstacles in reaching leadership roles, and often carry a disproportionate share of unpaid domestic labor alongside paid work. These disparities are not just individual choices but are rooted in structural and societal factors that shape the labor market, limiting women's economic independence, pensions, and career growth. This perpetuates inequality within the workforce. Exploring this issue not only helps understand the job market but also fosters awareness and meaningful dialogue.

The poster represents the gender pay gap across Europe, with a specific focus on Italy, exploring two sub-topics: gender segregation and care work.

As the title suggests, the poster visually conveys our frustration with the situation and underscores the urgency of addressing this issue.

The poster is divided into two sections: one focusing on Europe, analyzing the gender pay gap, and the other specifically addressing the situation in Italy, presenting data on care work and job segregation.

In this physical representation, we aimed to illustrate the labor gap in Italy. Black documents symbolize the women who, in 2021, were not working, while the white ones represent those who were employed.

2/3

In that year, 6 out of 10 women were not in the workforce.

How does this make you feel? We are left speechless.

This is the process that show the development of the poster and the research of a metaphor to use in order to make it as clear as possible while also engaging the viewer more effectively.

A project made in the course

Information Design & Visual Storytelling

In a world heavily driven by the production and consumption of information, being able to read and represent it has become extremely critical and undeniably important. The Information Design and Visual Storytelling course aims to provide students with the theoretical background - and the opportunity to practice it - necessary to develop visualization projects in their entirety. The first part of the course will consist of lectures interspersed with small exercises to make students familiarize with the disciplines of information design and visual storytelling. We will work together to understand the basic principles of the discipline and how to apply them in real projects.
