An exercise inspired by Marina Abramović. Choose how much rice and lentils you want to count. Maximum time of exercise: six hours. Remain seated in one setting. Separate and count rice and lentils. Little to no communication during the session. Use one A5 sheet of paper and a pencil to make notes. Use the paper in portrait orientation. Write down: Your name, starting time, amount counted, end time. Breaks: Note time and reason on the sheet.

What’s the Assignment?

In march 2025, eighteen students signed up for our semester project in Visual Communication at the Faculty of Design at the University of Bolzano, mysteriously titled What’s the Assignment? The stated goals: learning by doing, learn from each other, learn how to learn. We laid out five initial assignments. They covered branding and storytelling, photography, self-improvement through concentration, label design, and modular composition.
