The aim of Archivium is to guide participants in the further development of inventiveness and problem-solving through a fun yet challenging setup created by strict rules and limitations. The chosen medium is digital illustration, and the participants' goal is to revitalise and animate archive photographs of the territory, breathing new life into historical images. This process encourages creative exploration providing engmatic and abstract prompts to stimulate a more audacious approach.

Instruction

The assignment will be divided in four rounds of 30 minutes each. You have 10 seconds to choose a photo. Download it and illustrate it according to the prompt given. Use digital tools only to illustrate (such as Procreate, Fresco or Photoshop). Stick to the four colour palette given. You may not photo-edit the image (no collages or effects). When the countdown is over, upload your images on the assigned folder.

In order to make the task more challenging we added some rules on the way: we would not notify about the passage of time until there were just 5 minutes left, and we reduced the time frame to 20 minutes at the end.

What’s the Assignment?

In march 2025, eighteen students signed up for our semester project in Visual Communication at the Faculty of Design at the University of Bolzano, mysteriously titled What’s the Assignment? The stated goals: learning by doing, learn from each other, learn how to learn. We laid out five initial assignments. They covered branding and storytelling, photography, self-improvement through concentration, label design, and modular composition.
