Bellevue di Monaco - Städtischer Widerstand im Glockenbachviertel, München
Lea Alina Saerchinger
Urban development, particularly in cases of gentrification, often sparks resistance, driven both by concerns about economic distribution and the transformation of public space. This critical issue, along with its broader implications, is the focus of my thesis, in which I explore *Bellevue di Monaco*, a housing and cultural center located in the center of Munich.
Born out of a citizen protest against urban demolition plans, *Bellevue di Monaco* has grown since its founding in 2015 into a significant institution within Munich's urban society. It offers a home to many and serves as a support hub for refugees seeking help in the form of language courses, counseling, or cultural activities. It is a social meeting point that reflects the diversity of the city’s population and promotes intercultural dialogue.
The purpose of this thesis is to document the essence of this place and its development over the years – a tribute to the history and the people who have shaped it. It also examines the complex intersections of architecture, gentrification, activism, and integration. The outcome of this research consists of six interrelated books, each focusing on a different aspect of the center. In order to create a vivid portrayal of the space, various media formats are used, including texts, photographs, interviews, and sound. This thesis is aimed at readers interested in themes such as integration, urban development, and social justice, illustrating how a local project addresses global challenges.
