Isn’t a museum the perfect place to conceal these shameful traces of fascism?

Degree Project

Is It Really Our Duty to Add Fresh Ruins to the Field of Ruins?

Nicola Parise

This thesis project is about conceiving and designing an exhibition of urban traces of fascism in Bozen-Bolzano. The exhibition focuses on Siegesplatz-Piazza della Vittoria and its monumental apparatus, as the square constitutes the centre of the city’s symbolic transformation in the fascist period.
The exhibit concept is based on proposing a personal selection of the urban traces of fascism, and then displaying them as re-contextualized objects. The exhibited artifacts, intended here as imprecise reproductions of what stands outside, are re-politicized, since it is a necessity, once they have been brought inside the exhibition space, to change the relation with their hosting environment. In the exhibition, things seem so distant from the vigorous images of fascism scattered around the cityscape, they are likely to be faded traces of the originals, thus offering a reflection on the current significance of these presences.
