Why does sex work affect everyone?

Die Debatte über Prostitution bleibt ein zentrales Thema im gesellschaftlichen Diskurs und wirft grundlegende Fragen zu Frauenbildern, Selbstbestimmung und Ausbeutung auf. Wenn sie freiwillig ausgeübt wird, kann sie als Ausdruck von Eigenermächtigung verstanden werden. Kritiker verweisen jedoch auf patriarchale Strukturen, die Ungleichheit und Kriminalisierung in diesem Bereich aufrechterhalten. Obwohl weltweit täglich sexuelle Dienstleistungen angeboten werden, bleibt das Thema heikel, tabuisiert und von Sensationslust geprägt. Besonders die Darstellung von Frauen in den visuellen Medien spielt eine zentrale Rolle, da sie gesellschaftliche Vorstellungen von Moral und Sexualität prägt und die mit Sexarbeit verbundenen Stigmata entweder verstärkt oder aufbricht. In meinem Projekt untersuche ich zunächst, welche Darstellung von Sexarbeit in der visuellen Kommunikation existiert und erforsche anschließend, wie sie den gesellschaftlichen Diskurs darüber prägt. Ich möchte herausfinden, wie Bildsprache genutzt werden kann, um komplexe Spannungsfelder zwischen Selbstermächtigung und Stigmatisierung sichtbar zu machen. Ziel dabei ist es, die stereotype Darstellung der Frau in der Prostitution zu hinterfragen und neue Perspektiven auf das Thema zu eröffnen.

Il dibattito sulla prostituzione rimane un argomento centrale nel discorso sociale e solleva questioni fondamentali sull'immagine della donna, sull'autodeterminazione e sullo sfruttamento. Se viene praticata volontaria-mente, può essere vista come un'espressione di auto-emancipazione. Tuttavia, i critici sottolineano le strutture patriarcali che perpetuano la disuguaglianza e la criminalizzazione in questo settore. Sebbene i servizi sessuali siano offerti quotidianamente in tutto il mondo, l'argomento rimane delicato, tabù e caratterizzato da sensazionalismo. In particolare, la rappresentazione visiva delle donne nei media svolge un ruolo centrale, in quanto modella le nozioni sociali di moralità e sessualità e rafforza o abbatte gli stigmi associati al lavoro sessuale. Nel mio progetto, esaminerò innanzitutto quale rappresentazione del lavoro sessuale esiste nella comunicazione visiva e poi esplorerò come essa modella il discorso sociale su di esso. Voglio scoprire come il linguaggio visivo possa essere utilizzato per visualizzare aree complesse di tensione tra auto-emancipazione e stigmatizzazione. L'obiettivo è mettere in discussione la rappresentazione stereotipata delle donne che si prostituiscono e aprire nuove prospettive sull'argomento.

The debate about prostitution remains a central topic in societal discourse and raises fundamental questions about images of women, self-determination and exploitation. If it is practiced voluntarily, it can be seen as an expression of self-empowerment. However, critics point to patriarchal structures that perpetuate inequality and criminalization in this area. Although sexual services are offered worldwide on a daily basis, the topic remains sensitive, taboo and characterized by sensationalism. In particular, the visual representation of women in the media plays a central role as it shapes social notions of morality and sexuality and either reinforces or breaks down the stigmas associated with sex work. In my project, I will first examine what representation of sex work exists in visual communication and then explore how it shapes social discourse about it. I want to find out how visual language can be used to depict complex areas of tension between self-empowerment and stigmatization. The aim is to question the stereotypical representation of women in prostitution and to open up new perspectives on the topic.
