How can we create meaningful connections with water?

Degree Project

Essere ~ being water ~ a journey into water awareness

Sarah Daniel Doetsch

The Essere project explores approaches to environmental communication through a three-part intervention planned for SETE Festival 2025. Building on the findings of the data-gamification installation implemented at SETE Festival 2024 in collaboration with Sheldon.studio, this project develops new ways to raise public awareness of water issues through participatory design and personal engagement strategies. The project is evolving from the initial installation-based approach to an integrated system consisting of three interconnected components: an enhanced festival infrastructure that combines data visualization with sensory experiences; a child-focused take-home workbook that guides young people in exploring water awareness; and a digital platform that provides information about upcoming installation events and open-source building plans. This integrated approach ensures that engagement continues after the festival to create a sustainable dialog about water awareness, with a particular focus on empowering children to bring water-related discussions into their homes and families.

This way the project transforms complex water-related data into accessible, interactive experiences through multiple entry points of engagement. The methodology combines participatory data physicalization with principles of embodied learning to create meaningful interactions that bridge different areas of environmental communication, with special attention to making these concepts accessible and engaging for young audiences.
