What do you already know about the menstrual cycle?

Degree Project

Hallo, Ich* Menstruiere

Theresa Felicia Handig

The menstrual cycle is a recurring process in the body as part of the reproductive function, generally lasting between 25 and 32 days. Everyone who menstruates has a unique, individual, fluctuating rhythm. It must be emphasized that although the period is an important part of the menstrual cycle, it is only one of the four phases.

My bachelor’s thesis engages with enabling both, people who menstruate as well as those who don’t, with easily accessible, illustrative information about a routine bodily process that remains shrouded in taboo. I envision a clear and enjoyable guide explaining the cycle’s various phases, with chapters that cover a range of topics, from biological processes to advice on syncing diet and exercise with each phase. The content would be accompanied by illustrations that could enhance accessibility, helping to demystify the misinformation surrounding periods.

Menstruation is increasingly becoming a topic of social focus and given these circumstances, a short but helpful guide can raise awareness of the need for education, especially in schools, and help break social taboos around the topic. Apart from the general awareness of the menstrual cycle and its functions, there is another important aspect: accessibility. This type of educational material should be affordable and accessible to all.

Finally, I developed a print medium, a guide containing four booklets, each explaining another cycle phase to provide helpful answers to questions within the theme. This guide aims to empower menstruating individuals to engage with their cycle in a more informed and enjoyable way, fostering a deeper connection with their bodies.
