Third Place for Gries
Jens Mayer Monica Ramos Marquez Carolina Reisinger
Outside of your home, school or workplace, is there a place you like where you can meet with others? A third place can be defined as such. How is the interaction you take part in there? And most importantly, how can this kind of places be co-designed by the community? Our project took the challenge of having a social open space that is not fixed, able to move around the city and accommodated to what people need. We went through the streets of the Gries neighborhood carrying a trolley that started as a research platform to then transform into a third place proposal. We carried out a collective map that gave us the input to design game activities and later co-create a prototype. Along our partner Blufink, we integrated a dialogue format with the Gries citizens to talk about the topic and re-activate a garden center that used to be an important third place for the locals.
