Are soft carpets overrated?

UMHUS

Gabriele Barchetti

UMHUS is a project that wants to bring nature and the sensations that make us feel inside the house. It is made from a bag that is filled with natural materials to recreate different surfaces, then just open it on the floor to walk barefoot.

The goal of the project is to reconnect themselves with their body but also with nature. Walking barefoot is something not very common in our life, we always have shoes and socks, nature is then increasingly far from our homes. Thanks to UMHUS you can try again these sensations giving great benefits, in fact this gesture can reduce stress and relax, helps to strengthen the musculation of the sole of the foot and circulation and accustoms us to have a different sensitivity on our feet. Depending on the material with which it is filled you can also experience different sensations with alternative purposes. I also make much larger lake stones, sand, wood bark and any other natural material that comes to mind.

At the same time, however, it also looks very playful, after a while you walk above you start to have fun and you feel a bit of the feeling of being children in nature that feel something new. The context in which the project should be used is inside the house, from the living room to the bedroom but also the bathroom. In fact it is also a decorative element that can also be modular if you have the possibility, thus alternating different surfaces and creating a real path with different environments.

The power of Play

“The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct.” Carl Jung Play is a way of being in this world. It is our way to engage with it and make it ours through our personal expression. Therefore, we better take play more seriously and use its full potential to explore and understand our world – such as children do. As human beings and especially as designers.
