How can be a city gender equal and safer? How women perceive urban space?

Starting from the observation of gender inequalities in urban space, this paper analyses how the city is often structured according to male models that exclude or marginalise the needs and experiences of women.Through a multidisciplinary approach that interweaves feminist urban planning studies, qualitative and quantitative data, and analyses of the local context of the city of Bozen/Bolzano, the paper investigates how fear, even more than concrete violence, is often internalised, normalised and limits women’s freedom of movement and contributes to their exclusion from public space. Starting from these reflections, a mobile app is designed with a human-centred approach that aims to create a network of support and sharing among women, offering tools for reporting, mapping of safe places and dissemination of good practices.The aim is to promote a new paradigm of active citizenship, generate useful data for institutions and encourage forms of collective care of urban space. The project aims to focus on trust, community and women’s empowerment.
