How about a new perspective on apple fields?

.vista - Ein neuer Blickwinkel auf die vinschger Apfellandschaft

Sophia Basso

My product idea is part of the “rundum” concept, which I developed together with my fellow students Lisa and Emma. The “rundum” project aims to increase biodiversity in the Val Venosta apple orchards through the creative use of residual areas. One strategy includes the creation of “rundum” spaces at the intersection of fields belonging to different farmers and the establishment of hidden biodiversity islands. In addition, we would like to link the concept with tourism, by creating places of education for tourists and locals with information points, seating possibilities and sheltered areas (small-scale architecture).

My individual project “puntovista” delves into the orchards of apple cultivation and their interplay with the encompassing landscape, offering a distinctive perspective facilitated by a perch. Designed for 1-2 people, the elevation provides an overview of the apple fields underneath. Geared towards passing cyclists, strollers, and hikers, “puntovista” serves as a resting place, inviting visitors to sit, rest, and enjoying the panoramic view.

The design emphasizes a minimal, modern, and elegant aesthetic, characterized by a transparent structure that utilizes natural and sustainable materials. The platform serves as a perspective-altering perch, positioning the observer within a broader landscape. Like a camera pointed at a carefully chosen vantage point, it directs the gaze.

“Puntovista” explores various themes such as the cultural landscape, the factors contributing to the beauty of a landscape, and the ongoing debate surrounding pesticides in apple cultivation. The project is an avenue for sparking conversations about the relationship between agriculture, environment and society, serving as a catalyst for mindful reflection and encouraging a diverse perspective.

A project made in the course

A is for Apple - From Fruit to Cultural Landscape

Vinschgau controversies and design perspectives. This winter semester, I wanted to encourage a group of interested students to rethink design in the context of the social, ecological and agricultural controversies of our time. (neuer Absatz!) As part of the A is for Apple project, we have explored the history of the apple as food, commodity and cultural plant, from cultivation to sorting as well as its storage, packaging and marketing infrastructure. In our research, we have analysed the conflicts and effects of intensive apple farming on ecosystems, the cultural landscape and tourism.
