Type & Time - Ein Schriftentwurf inspiriert von den Handschriften Vigil Rabers

DE Diese Bachelor-Arbeit widmet sich der Gestaltung einer zeitgenössischen Schrift, die sich von den Handschriften des Sterzinger Spielleiters Vigil Raber inspirieren lässt. Ausgangspunkt ist das kulturelle Erbe der Stadt Sterzing, die im Mittelalter als Handels- und Theaterzentrum eine bedeutende Rolle spielte. Raber (1490–1552) prägte das städtische Theaterleben nachhaltig – nicht nur als Spielleiter, sondern auch als Sammler und Bearbeiter zahlreicher geistlicher und weltlicher Stücke, die er handschriftlich dokumentierte.
Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, eine neue Schrift zu entwickeln, die gestalterische Eigenständigkeit mit historischem Bezug verbindet. Grundlage bilden ausgewählte Originaldokumente aus dem Sterzinger Stadtarchiv, die im Rahmen des Projekts analysiert, kontextualisiert und typografisch interpretiert werden. Die Arbeit fragt danach, wie historische Schriftformen in einen gegenwärtigen Designkontext überführt werden können – ohne sie zu kopieren, sondern durch bewusste gestalterische Annäherung. Die Arbeit untersucht, wie gestalterische Mittel eingesetzt werden können, um charakteristische Merkmale der Handschriften Vigil Rabers neu zu interpretieren. Dabei verbindet die Thesis Schriftgestaltung, archivgestützte Analyse und typografische Reflexion, mit dem Ziel, eine Schrift zu entwerfen, die sowohl formal eigenständig ist, als auch als Medium kultureller Erinnerung funktioniert.
EN This bachelor thesis focuses on the design of a contemporary typeface inspired by the handwritten manuscripts of Vigil Raber, a 16th-century theatre director from the town of Sterzing. The starting point is the cultural heritage of Sterzing, which flourished in the Middle Ages as a centre of trade and theatre. Raber (1490–1552) significantly shaped the town’s theatrical life – not only as a director, but also as a collector and editor of numerous sacred and secular plays, which he documented by hand.
The aim of this project is to develop a new typeface that combines historical reference with an independent, contemporary design approach. Selected original manuscripts from the Sterzing town archive serve as the foundation for this work. These documents are analysed, contextualised, and interpreted typographically. The thesis explores how historical letterforms can be brought into a modern design context – not by replicating them, but through a conscious and reflective reinterpretation. It examines how design tools can be used to translate the characteristic features of Raber’s writing into a new visual language. By combining type design, archival research, and typographic reflection, the thesis aims to create a typeface that stands on its own while acting as a visual medium of cultural memory.
IT Questa tesi di laurea si concentra sulla progettazione di un carattere tipografico contemporaneo ispirato ai manoscritti di Vigil Raber, direttore teatrale del XVI secolo originario della città di Vipiteno. Il punto di partenza è il patrimonio culturale di Vipiteno, che nel Medioevo visse un periodo di grande fioritura come centro commerciale e teatrale. Raber (1490–1552) influenzò profondamente la scena teatrale cittadina – non solo come regista, ma anche come collezionista e curatore di numerose opere sacre e profane, che documentò personalmente a mano.
L’obiettivo del progetto è lo sviluppo di un carattere che unisca riferimenti storici a un approccio grafico autonomo. I documenti originali selezionati, conservati nell’archivio comunale di Vipiteno, costituiscono la base dell’analisi, contestualizzazione e interpretazione tipografica. La tesi esplora come le forme storiche della scrittura possano essere tradotte in un contesto di design contemporaneo – non tramite una riproduzione diretta, ma attraverso un processo di rielaborazione consapevole. Viene analizzato come gli strumenti progettuali possano essere utilizzati per reinterpretare in chiave moderna i tratti distintivi della scrittura di Raber. Combinando progettazione tipografica, ricerca d’archivio e riflessione tipografica, la tesi mira a creare un carattere che sia formalmente autonomo e, al contempo, forma visiva della memoria culturale.
