HistaMine
Sofia Bonomi
Histamine is a molecule produced by the human body and present in many foods; typically, two enzymes can metabolize it. However, 1-3% of the global population suffers from histamine intolerance, caused by an imbalance between the amount of the molecule in the body and the efficiency of the degrading enzymes. This condition can manifest with a range of symptoms, often complex to manage. Currently, the treatment is based on a restrictive diet that excludes foods high in histamine content. The intolerance can thus be highly debilitating from a physical, psychological, and social perspective.
Using a qualitative and participatory research approach—structured through questionnaires and interviews with people intolerant to histamine—it was possible to understand their needs and behavioral patterns. The research highlighted the complexity and sense of disorientation that people often face, revealing the urgent need for targeted support and guidance tools.
Recognizing the potential to make people's experience more positive, HistaMine was conceptualized. HistaMine is a mobile digital application that offers support to those intolerant to histamine in a personalized and holistic manner, fostering interaction between patient and doctor. For individuals, HistaMine helps in managing symptoms and diet and provides personalized education through interactive and multimedia content. For doctors, it facilitates more effective and personal communication with patients.
