Ordinary Sculptures
Maximilian Obexer
Ordinary Sculptures examines the often overlooked yet profound transformation of the contemporary landscape, focusing on structures that support communication technologies, such as communication towers. The interest lies in the formal qualities of these anonymous artifacts, which are the result of pure technical functionality and that are rarely considered as objects of aesthetic interest.
Through a consistent documentary photographic approach and starting from the rigorous methodology of Bernd and Hilla Becher’s work, the series aims to elevate these structures beyond their mere functionality, transfiguring them into sculptural forms and volumes. This approach involves the use of an analog tool: the view camera. It allows the exploration of formal and surface qualities with maximum technical precision, enabling visual abstraction, as well as a reflection on the role that the camera plays in the construction of images.
The series observes these structures with the same sense of wonder granted to natural elements, offering a pure observation and an aesthetic testimony of the ever-changing landscape.
